Alternative Flooring guide: wool, naturals and patterned floors
Choose the material as carefully as the pattern. Wool, plant fibres and synthetic alternatives can look related while needing different fitting and care.
A design-led starting point
Alternative Flooring presents carpets, rugs and runners as a way to introduce personal colour, texture and pattern. Its design story is useful inspiration, but it is not a substitute for product-specific construction or environmental evidence.

Separate the material families
Use wool, plant-fibre and faux/synthetic as distinct comparison groups. Alternative’s care guidance also places some wool mixtures, including wool with sisal or Tencel, in its more delicate group. A wool percentage alone therefore does not identify the cleaning method.

A named example: Wool Iconic Herringstripe Arova
| Yarn | 100% wool |
|---|---|
| Construction | Woven |
| Published width | 4 m, with the stated ±1.5% tolerance |
| Pattern repeat | 10.75 cm |
| Tog | 1 |
| Listed use classification | Class 23 — Heavy Domestic |
The manufacturer lists stairs among the uses. Its field heading “Contract Suitability” does not convert the stated Heavy Domestic classification into commercial approval. The named product—not the whole brand—is the scope of this example.

What natural texture changes in the design process
Alternative’s seagrass collection describes natural colour variation between harvests and offers different weaves. For your room, compare the texture and tone of a current sample rather than relying entirely on a styled photograph.
Evidence: Alternative Seagrass carpets.
Plan the runner or full-width carpet
Our design checklist starts with a measured drawing: direction of the pattern, visible border widths, doorway views and how the floor meets adjoining finishes. For a runner, agree which dimension includes the border and how the pattern is centred. For a full-width carpet, locate any proposed seam before ordering.
Ask for a marked-up layout and keep it with the quotation. A small sample can show colour and texture, but it cannot settle the position of a motif on winders or the appearance of a join.
Fitting and care should influence the shortlist
Alternative distinguishes latex-backed natural-fibre double-stick installation from conventional wool fitting, and identifies particular flatweaves where joining is not recommended. Use the exact instructions before finalising the layout.

What the warranty page establishes
The manufacturer offers registration for a five-year warranty and asks customers to retain the certificate and purchase proof. Full exclusions and commercial applicability need the relevant terms; they have not been inferred from the registration page.
Evidence: Alternative warranty registration.
Before requesting a final price
Keep the product code, current sample, layout, backing and care category together. Obtain confirmation for stairs or commercial use where required. This guide does not certify the entire catalogue, current stock, FD prices or availability of a particular border.
