FLOORDESIGNS / QUESTION & ANSWER
Can every Alternative carpet be used as a stair runner?
No. Check the named product’s stair suitability and installation method. Being available as a rug or runner does not establish stair approval.
What the installation guidance says
Alternative tells customers to check stair suitability separately for natural fibres, wool and faux carpets. Latex-backed natural products approved for stairs use its specified double-stick approach. Heavy-use or commercial stair details need separate consideration; a residential photograph is not a specification.
Evidence: Alternative installation tips.
Use a positive, named example
Wool Iconic Herringstripe Arova 1565 lists stairs among its intended uses. Keep that evidence attached to Arova, rather than extending it to every flatweave or natural-fibre product.

What the staircase drawing should show
Record tread and riser dimensions, winders, landings, open sides, the finished runner width and the chosen border. Ask where the pattern starts and how it aligns at a turn. Confirm edge protection and any nosings with the fitter before cutting.
Treat accessories and the fixing method as separate decisions. Do not assume a decorative finish proves that the runner is securely installed or suitable for the staircase. For commercial work, obtain written project-specific confirmation.
