Alternative flooring: plan fitting, joins and aftercare
The material, backing, room and proposed joins determine the questions to settle before an Alternative carpet or runner is cut.
Resolve the installation method before cutting
Alternative recommends double-stick fitting for latex-backed natural plant fibres. Its wool guidance distinguishes conventional fitting from particular flatwoven or stiffer-backed products. It cautions against joining Wool Iconic, Wool Herringbone and Wool Hygge, and flags visible variation when joining Barefoot. These are named-product limitations, not a general statement that carpets cannot be joined.

Prepare a measurable room brief
Mark maximum dimensions, recesses, thresholds and stairs on a plan. Ask the fitter to record the selected roll width, pile or pattern direction and seam proposal. Where a product should fit in one width, check the usable width and tolerances rather than treating a nominal width as an exact cut size.
For a border or runner, agree the finished overall width and the visible field inside the borders. Include decisions at landings, turns and doorway transitions in the drawing.
Choose aftercare by material
Alternative’s natural/delicate instructions recommend suction-only vacuuming and do not recommend water or steam extraction. The care page distinguishes this from its synthetic and wool advice. Intec is described as a stain inhibitor, not prevention of every mark; it does not remove the need for prompt, appropriate attention.
Evidence: Alternative product care.
The handover should be practical
Our suggested handover identifies the exact cleaner and equipment, the document version, who to contact about a spill and what not to use. Include the border material as well as the carpet: the surface in the centre is not the only material in a bound runner.
Request separate guidance for an older stain or unidentified fibre. Do not use a carpet-cleaning machine merely because it is advertised for carpets in general.
Keep cover and care records together
Alternative’s registration page asks customers to retain a warranty certificate and original purchase proof. It does not provide enough information to promise cover for all staining, installation concerns or business uses.
Evidence: Alternative warranty registration.
Report a concern without obscuring the evidence
Photograph the detail and surrounding room, record when the change appeared and list any products already used. Ask for assessment before an irreversible repair. This is a consumer planning guide; it does not replace the fitter’s product-specific installation specification.
