Altro flooring guide: choose by room and slip risk

Altro includes different safety and decorative flooring systems. Start with contamination, traffic and cleaning needs, then compare the named product and installation route.

Begin with the activity in the room

Write a brief for each area rather than specifying one floor throughout by brand name. A corridor, food preparation area and barefoot shower have different questions. HSE advises matching workplace flooring to the activity and expected contamination. Product selection is part of that assessment, not a certificate that a space cannot produce slips.

Evidence: HSE flooring guidance.

Three examples that are not interchangeable

Selected manufacturer descriptions, not a complete Altro catalogue
ProductSelected specificationStarting application
Walkway 202 mm safety roll; published PTV ≥36General areas where water contamination is a concern
Illustra adhesive-free2.4 mm; decorative safety flooringBusy public interiors where installation disruption matters
Stronghold 30 adhesive-free3 mm; commercial-kitchen systemAreas with the stated food-service contaminants, subject to installation exceptions

Compare design without losing the specification

Build the visual palette after the use requirements are clear. Compare tone, pattern scale, adjoining finishes and practical transitions on the same room drawing. A coordinated colour does not prove two products have identical slip, acoustic or installation performance.

Request the exact product name, colour code and test evidence for every area. Keep a schedule that distinguishes the main floor from stairs, shower areas or spaces with specialist electrical requirements.

Adhesive-free is a system description

Stronghold 30 adhesive-free has stated adhesive requirements at vulnerable points and for certain stairs and cold rooms. Do not use the name to omit preparation or assume that adhesive is never involved.

Evidence: Altro Stronghold 30 adhesive-free.

Make cleaning part of the purchase

The Altro safety-flooring cleaning document lists the products it covers and includes special cases. Match the proposed cleaning regime to that list rather than copying instructions from smooth vinyl or another Altro system.

Evidence: Altro safety flooring cleaning PDF.

Warranty is a separate document

The UK registration page requires submission within three months of installation. Its “up to” headline must not be used as every floor’s warranty period. Ask for the specific duration, terms and certificate for the named product and project.

Evidence: Altro UK guarantee registration.

Your specification and quotation checklist

Request the product schedule, installation build-up, preparation assessment, seam and edge details, cleaning method and applicable guarantee. Ask which evidence supports each specialist requirement. For a fitted quotation, make responsibilities for access, closure periods, protection and handover explicit.

This is a guide to selected products and specification questions, not approval for healthcare, food-service or other regulated premises. A competent specifier and installer must assess the actual site.
