Abingdon flooring guide: fibres, ranges and real differences
Compare Stainfree, Love Story and Wilton Royal by material, construction and intended use. Then check the exact range rather than relying on the brand name.
The story behind the carpet
Abingdon’s own history traces its distribution roots to 1957 and its own carpet production to 1967. It records investment in polypropylene extrusion and the arrival of Stainfree in 1987, followed by the Love Story polyester collection in 2015. These are manufacturer-reported milestones; the age of a brand does not establish how an individual floor is made.
Evidence: Abingdon history.
Three carpet families, three starting points
| Family | Published material direction | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Stainfree | Polypropylene, including twist, saxony and loop constructions | Construction, room use and applicable cleaning instructions |
| Love Story | Polyester carpets | Pile appearance, feel and the exact care routine |
| Wilton Royal | Wool and wool-blend carpets | Fibre percentages, weave or pile and range-specific evidence |

Read a real specification: Charter Berber Loop
The published Charter Berber Loop specification identifies 100% wool, fleece backing, widths of 2.5, 4 and 5 metres, and a tog value of 1.67. It lists Heavy Domestic and General Commercial suitability. The same page advertises a 12-year wear warranty; the separate wear-warranty document describes domestic conditions. Commercial suitability must therefore not be read as confirmation of commercial warranty cover.

Turn the sample into a room decision
Make your shortlist on two sheets: one for the look and one for the installation. On the first, place the carpet beside paint, joinery and upholstery; note whether you prefer a quiet surface or a more visible texture. On the second, sketch the room, doorways, stairs and possible joins. Ask for the proposed roll plan, rather than assuming floor area alone tells you how much to order.
A useful comparison keeps the room and work scope unchanged while swapping the carpet. Request separate descriptions of underlay, preparation, fitting, thresholds and any uplift. This is our planning method, not a claim that one family is universally better.
Underlay, heating and care are separate choices
Abingdon recommends appropriate underlay for its carpets and tells customers to consider the combined carpet-and-underlay thermal resistance alongside the heating supplier’s requirements. The carpet’s own tog value is not the whole system.
Evidence: Abingdon frequently asked questions.
Do not transfer carpet rules to hard flooring
Abingdon also publishes a Simply Nature engineered-wood range. That needs its own wood specification, installation and aftercare documents; a stain guarantee for carpet is not an engineered-wood warranty.

What to retain before ordering
Record the range, colour, backing, selected width and written room-use confirmation. Keep the dated technical and warranty documents with the quotation. For business premises, request explicit cover for that use. This guide is a selected-product introduction, not a verified inventory of every Abingdon colour or format.
