FLOORDESIGNS / QUESTION & ANSWER
Can Abingdon carpet be used over underfloor heating?
Some combinations can be suitable. Check the carpet and underlay together, then obtain confirmation against the actual heating system.
Which figure matters?
Abingdon’s FAQ cites a recommended maximum combined carpet-and-underlay rating of 2.5 tog and says the heating manufacturer’s instructions must also be considered. That is published guidance, not universal permission for every electric or water-based system.
Evidence: Abingdon frequently asked questions.
A worked comparison, not a product approval
Charter Berber Loop is listed at 1.67 tog. Under a 2.5-tog combined ceiling, subtraction leaves 0.83 tog for an underlay. This arithmetic illustrates a check only: it does not select an underlay or approve the full build-up.
Evidence: Charter Berber Loop product specification.
What should the fitter confirm?
Ask for the exact carpet and underlay references, their documented resistance values and written compatibility with the proposed heating system. Record any operating, installation or commissioning restrictions. Recheck the combination if a component is substituted; a similar-looking carpet need not have the same specification.
Do not remove a required layer simply to make a total fit a target. Heating performance, fitting method and warranty applicability need to be assessed together.
