Havwoods: product and fitting guide

Havwoods offers architectural timber flooring in a wide range of species, engineered constructions, board sizes and finishes. For a successful wood floor, select the exact board first, then design the room layout, substrate preparation and fitted specification around its requirements.

Three very different Havwoods timber choices

Havwoods’ research references include Handgrade Premier Earth Douglas Fir (HW8707), Henley Antique European Oak (HW1597) and Venture Plank Hokuto Mizunara Japanese Oak (HW2374). They differ in species and design intent; a manufacturer name is not enough for a flooring estimate.

Compare samples with the room’s paint, fitted furniture and natural light. Genuine timber grain and colour variation should be understood before approval, especially when neighbouring rooms must feel consistent.

The Earth Douglas Fir example illustrates why dimensions matter

Havwoods publishes HW8707 Earth as a three-layer engineered Douglas Fir plank, 4000 mm long, 340 mm wide and 22 mm thick, with a 6 mm wear layer and lacquered finish. This is a named example, not a standard construction for all Havwoods products.

A four-metre-long board requires realistic delivery access, handling space and a competent fitting plan. Confirm floor buildup, doorway clearances and whether the building can accommodate the chosen board format.

Select the surface treatment, not simply an oak shade

A brushed lacquered finish has different ongoing maintenance considerations from an oiled timber surface. Species, grain, knots, grading, bevels and finishing alter the appearance and how an installed floor will age.

Read the exact product’s cleaning instructions and finish recommendations. Do not suggest refinishing or sanding without confirming wear-layer thickness and whether that named construction permits it.

Design layout and quantities before the price

Decide direction relative to daylight, main entrances and room proportions. Make a scale plan for openings, feature borders, heating zones and irregular alcoves; long boards and parquet designs create different cuts and installation labour.

Estimate quantities from the selected plank dimensions, usable offcuts and whole pack coverage. Product waste and fitting effort should be explained separately from the net finished floor area.

Treat subfloor preparation as part of the floor

The selected Havwoods product determines permitted installation method, adhesive, movement requirements and moisture limits. HW8707 lists glue-down installation, but another Havwoods construction may require different fitting instructions.

Before ordering, assess moisture, flatness, substrate soundness and the effect of underfloor heating. Allow for the actual height at doors, thresholds and stairs instead of assuming the old flooring can remain.

Plan the lifetime maintenance and commercial record

Keep the specific Havwoods product code, sample approval, installation guide, flooring batch, care recommendations and any manufacturer warranty documentation. An expensive design choice still depends on correct care and stable environmental conditions.

FloorDesigns Falkirk can help compare real wood flooring and prepare a measured quotation. Current prices, lead times and product availability must be confirmed when the order is placed.
